if you know ahead of time that you will not be able to/don’t have the funds to shell out the cash for a show, there are tons of other things that you can help with to make sure that it runs smoothly and that diy events can continue to happen for & with all of us because punk is pretty much the most important & best thing ever.
contact the promotor: they will be able to give you information & tell you what still needs to be done
flyer: dropping & hanging flyers is time consuming, and there are always spots that get missed, but it can be done quickly & efficiently with help
make a flyer: artwork is a really important part of diy and punk culture, and creative flyers not only provide crucial information in one location about the event, they help a community of collective art thrive. they’re also cool to keep duh.
promote the event/web page
be polite: organizers for shows will be more than willing to help you out/let you help out if we aren’t all jerks to each other
make or bring food
don’t bring booze or drugs: unless its to trade, and the space isn’t specifically substance-free, you will look like an asshole.
bring something else useful to trade
crowd control/making a space safer
help clean up afterwards
offer a place or couch for touring bands to sleep
…..and a bevy of other shit that has to happen so that an event can. punk shows don’t happen on their own, it’s all of our responsibility, so please don’t pretend that you don’t know that money is a necessary evil in that process or that you won’t know in advance that you won’t have any for it. nobody is making a profit off of that 5-7$ donation, it goes to gas so that touring bands can get to their next destination or to show space rent/repairs, or to a designated benefit. so show promotors & attendees, PLEASE work together so that shows can run smoothly & be fun & possible for everyone: be understanding of & work with people who don’t have expendable cash for shows, price shows appropriately, make yr donations if you can, help out if you can’t.
